National readiness
Governments Are Urging Households to Prepare. Here’s What They Actually Say.
The UK, United States and European Union have issued different preparedness messages. Understand what each recommends and how to use local guidance in your household plan.
What to check today
Use official guidance for your location to make one practical improvement. A preparedness campaign is not a disaster countdown.
- Check the original source, date and country behind a preparedness headline.
- Identify one household dependency and a realistic backup.
- Build gradually around supplies and equipment you can use.
The British government is expanding its household preparedness campaign. The White House has also urged Americans to prepare at home, and European institutions continue work on household resilience. Each addresses disruptions to services people use every day, including power, water and communication.
The recommendations differ by jurisdiction. Use the guidance for your location when deciding what to prepare.
The new UK campaign: three days, built gradually
On October 22, 2026, the UK Cabinet Office launched updated household guidance as the first stage of a three-year “Be Ready” campaign. It focuses on disruptions such as severe weather affecting power, water, phones and internet service. Much of the underlying advice has existed since 2024; the announcement expands how it reaches people.
A same-day statement to Parliament sets out the central message: households should aim to manage for three days, with bottled water and nonperishable food, and eligible residents should join the UK’s Priority Services Register. The government says people can gather supplies over time and recognizes that not everyone can take every step.
This is advice for UK households. U.S. households can ask their own utility about local support programs.
The White House: readiness starts before a crisis
In its September 2, 2026 National Preparedness Month message, the White House called on Americans to prepare their families, homes, businesses and communities for natural and human-caused threats. It points to understanding local risks, protecting property, knowing evacuation routes, keeping essential supplies and following trusted news and alerts.
The statement also addresses the resilience of infrastructure and supply chains. It does not give households a 90-day stockpiling instruction or announce a date when an emergency will occur. For an American reader, local hazards and local emergency instructions remain the starting point.
Europe’s 72-hour goal is an existing strategy
The European Commission’s Preparedness Union Strategy, introduced in March 2025, includes developing guidance for at least 72 hours of population self-sufficiency. Its scope covers multiple kinds of disruption and stronger coordination across society.
The strategy dates to March 2025; renewed social-media coverage is not a new emergency announcement. It also does not mean every country has issued identical instructions or that assistance is guaranteed to arrive after three days.
Our Pentagon FORTRESS explainer covers the separate military-planning story; installation requirements should not be substituted for household guidance.
Apply the guidance to your household
Choose a service your household relies on, such as cooking, receiving updates or reaching a relative. Write down how you would manage without it, who is responsible and what still needs to be checked.
Start with a step you can complete now. Move existing supplies somewhere everyone can find them. Read the instructions for equipment you already own. Ask your local utility about support available for your household’s circumstances. If you need to buy something, choose it for the specific gap you found.
Food deserves the same care. Review emergency food options by ingredients, preparation needs and portions your household will use. A shelf full of unfamiliar packages is harder to manage than a smaller reserve everyone understands.
Share the plan with the people involved, practice using the supplies and set a date to review what remains unfinished.
